About this grant
Despite recent laws, such as the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, the effects of apartheid still linger in South Africa. There is a critical need to help the general public understand the provisions of such acts through education and training. The state views this legislation as an important way to address the legacy of apartheid and build a nonracial democracy.Multiyear funding will support efforts by the South African Human Rights Commission to educate the general public about the Promotion of Equality Act at the provincial and local levels. The Commission will also produce a booklet and promote understanding of the act as part of human rights teaching in South African schools. The South African Human Rights Commission, established in 1995, encourages observance of, respect for, and protection of fundamental human rights.
