About this grant

In 1999 in response to serious elections violations, the INDEM Foundation developed a project, Information for Democracy – 2000+, to serve as an information resource and communication platform for non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the media, individuals and others involved and interested in elections monitoring. The upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in Russia, scheduled for December 2003 and March 2004 respectively, will likewise present a serious challenge to the country’s democratic institutions. There is a critical need to revitalize this resource.Funding will enable INDEM to pursue activities that include examining changes to elections legislation since 2000; updating legal and methodological databases on its Web site; publicizing the availability of the updated resource; expanding the network of observer-participants of the project and training participants in use of the Web site; compiling data and developing statistics on elections law violations; and holding conferences with project participants immediately after both the parliamentary and presidential elections to present results. The INDEM Foundation’s mission is to contribute to the development of democratic institutions in Russia through research.
