Implementation of the Afterschool Academies

Afterschool Academies were developed in response to the need expressed by afterschool providers for hands-on and rigorous content-rich practices that can increase the educational value of afterschool time for participants. Afterschool Academies provide professional development opportunities for afterschool educators that foster the development and implementation of high-quality afterschool programs.Multiyear funding will enable Foundations and its partners to plan and deliver eight Academies to front-line staff and those who support them; train other facilitators to deliver the Academies; develop a technology-based follow-up to the Academies; and create materials and tools, including a facilitator’s manual, to aid in the continued delivery of the Academies. Partners include the Community Network for Youth Development, Citizen Schools, Educational Development Center and individual consultants. In addition, Foundations and its partners will determine a cost structure that will lead to long-term sustainability and promote the integration of afterschool programming with school-based content a common practice in the field. The partners of the Afterschool Academies also will work to develop a facilitators academy to increase the quality of professional development in the afterschool field by sharing strategies with current trainers.
