About this grant

The Flint Community School district currently loses more students in ninth grade than any other year. In the past five years, the ninth-grade dropout rate has doubled. There is a critical need for intervention to counteract the growing trend.Multiyear funding will support a program to ensure the successful and sustained school attendance of 300 students entering ninth grade. Each year, 100 participants will be recruited from Flint middle schools to attend an intensive summer institute and follow-up seminars throughout the school year. Program objectives include introducing students to high school experiences in a non-threatening atmosphere and establishing a peer-mentor base consisting of fellow students and successful college students.Mott Community College, established in 1923, serves students from throughout Flint and Genesee County and surrounding communities.
