About this grant

Mekong Watch was established in 1993 to foster socially and environmentally sound development in the Mekong region of Southeast Asia. This grant will support efforts to prevent the negative impacts of development projects, particularly those funded by official Japanese development assistance. Multiyear funding will enable Mekong Watch to raise awareness about the new environmental and social guidelines of the official Japanese development assistance agencies, including the Japanese export credit agency; begin the dialogue to establish safeguard policies at the Japan External Trade Organization similar to guidelines of Japanese international financial institutions; support initiatives by non-governmental organizations in the region to use the newly created compliance mechanisms of Japanese international financial institutions and the Asian Development Bank; undertake research and analysis of emerging public financial institutions in China and Thailand to develop a foundation for future activities; and commission an independent assessment of its work.
