About this grant

The Beecher tornado, which swept through a highly populated area north of Flint in June 1953, remains the eighth deadliest tornado in U.S. history and the last single tornado to kill more than 100 people. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this tragedy, a memorial event is being planned to honor victims and survivors.Funding will support a memorial program on June 8, 2003 at the Beecher High School Auditorium. An exhibit of scrapbooks, photographs and newspaper accounts of the tornado will be open to the public following a survivors’ reunion. To help educate children and young people about the tornado and advances that have been made in public education and safety, a commemorative Web site has been created. Educational materials will also be available for classroom and other uses. The Heart of Senior Citizen Services, located in the Beecher area, serves more than 2,000 older adults, including a number of tornado survivors and long-time Beecher residents. It provides more than 85 programs, events and medical, nutritional and recreational services.
