About this grant
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund seeks to improve the quality of life for South African children and youth. The fund accomplishes this by supporting organizations that implement programs and projects to help children from impoverished backgrounds; promoting the rights of children and youth; and advocating on behalf of children and youth for government child- and youth-friendly policies and interventions.Multiyear funding will support the fund’s main areas of grantmaking: the well-being of the child; education and development; children and youth with disabilities; and leadership and excellence. Activities will include introducing proactive program planning; clarifying program responsibilities regarding management, oversight, reporting, monitoring and evaluation; developing and implementing a focused advocacy and knowledge management strategy; encouraging research and policy analysis on issues related to children and youth; and establishing measurement and benchmarking standards. The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was created in 1994 with a private donation from Nelson Mandela. In 2000, Mott provided a $2-million endowment grant.
