About this grant

Since 2003, the Sustainability Institute has designed and implemented a community development training and capacity-building course for people working in community-based organizations. The course combines face-to-face, distance learning and online methods.Multiyear funding will enable the institute to refine a nationally accredited curriculum for community-based development workers; develop a sample training module in CD-ROM format; pilot the module with community-based organizations in the Western Cape; expand the network of licensed providers offering training based on the materials to a more national audience; and establish collaborative relationships and funding partnerships with development funding organizations. The first phase of the project included compiling a profile of the training needs of community-based organizations; establishing the information communication technology context of community-development workers; developing an open-learning support and management system; creating a development management and practice curriculum and piloting this in the Western Cape; and beginning the process for accreditation.
