About this grant
The District Six Museum Foundation was established in 1989 as an educational project to assist the communities of Cape Town in preserving the heritage of District Six, an area adjacent to Cape Town in which diverse racial and ethnic groups resided and peacefully coexisted until the mid-1960s, when all people of color were forcibly removed and their houses destroyed. Following democratic changes in 1994, District Six was returned to its original inhabitants.Multiyear funding will support activities that include seeking recognition for the museum as a national heritage site; expanding the museum; developing a theater, arts and crafts market, and conference area; conducting leadership training programs; overseeing restoration projects in District Six; continuing research and oral history programs; and broadening community outreach and educational programs. Recent accomplishments included establishing a professional management team; assisting the District Six Beneficiary Trust in land restitution; promoting reconciliation, healing and nation building through the museum; and achieving provisional status as a national heritage site.
