About this grant
The District Six Museum Foundation was established to mark the forced removal of people of color from District Six by the apartheid state during the 1960s. It has since developed into an important national memorial site involved in programs and activities that promote healing and reconciliation. Mott has provided general institutional and operational support to the museum for its work, including oral history projects, educational outreach, and assisting people who had their land returned, to come back to the area. This grant will continue to provide general purposes support, focusing on strengthening the capacity of the museum, particularly as this relates to developing the Sack Futeran Complex–a building that has been purchased adjacent to the museum–to expand the museum, establish a theatre, arts and crafts market, and conference facility, all of which will assist in ensuring its long-term sustainability.
