About this grant
This program supports community processes that enhance good governance at the local level and facilitates engagement between communities and their local governments for improved service delivery. Past achievements include training ward committees and civil society organizations in poor, marginalized communities so they can fully participate in municipal planning processes. Municipalities were supported to effectively engage communities in decisionmaking processes through workshops. Research and evaluation, public policy analysis, and advocacy also formed part of the program. This grant will support continuation of workshops and training on community engagement and other topics related to democracy and good governance for ward committees, councilors, government officials, and community members. Research and evaluation will also be undertaken to determine lessons learned in order to improve intervention strategies. Established in 1985, Planact works mainly in the urban areas of the Gauteng province, helping to build the capacity of community-based organizations to participate in local governance.
