About this grant
The year 2004 will mark the 10th anniversary of the end of apartheid and the beginning of a new democracy in South Africa. While the country has made significant progress, economic transformation has not matched political transformation. There is a critical need for informed debate and discussion on the state of democracy.Multiyear funding will support an annual publication that will provide a benchmark on the direction the country is taking and serve as an accessible source of information for international readers interested in key developments and trends in South Africa. The publication will review the previous year, analyzing and commenting on major trends, developments and challenges. Each edition will feature a commentary on the president’s annual opening address to the national parliament, outlining the government’s plans for the coming year. Areas to be covered include the state of politics, the state of the economy, civil society relations, and South Africa in Africa and the world. The Human Sciences Research Council was established by the South African government to promote research and knowledge in the field of human sciences.
