About this grant

This grant provides continued support for Columbia University’s Public Interest Law initiative, which promotes the development of a public interest law infrastructure in Central/Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States (the countries that until 1991 were constituent republics of the former USSR). The project provides technical assistance for strategic litigation on freedom of information and association issues; expands clinical legal education programs on women’s and children’s rights and environmental law; and publishes technical handbooks and papers. Regional legal experts provide training and other assistance; encourage networking; and share lessons learned through workshops, seminars, publications and the project’s Web site.
