About this grant

The program goal is to promote active civic engagement through public interest law programs as well as advocacy initiatives by nongovernmental organizations in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, and selected other countries. The Public Interest Law Institute’s program areas include promoting access to justice for socially vulnerable, poor, and disadvantaged people; fostering new generations of public interest lawyers by making legal education more practice oriented; leveraging private sector legal resources for the public good through institutionalized pro bono programs; and building the advocacy skills of nonprofits working on freedom of expression, access to information, antidiscrimination, and other relevant issues. With staff in New York, Budapest, and Moscow, the institute provides expert advice and technical assistance and facilitates peer-to-peer learning and information exchange among a wide range of experts, nonprofits, and public sector actors.
