About this grant

Founded in 1928 as an art school and incorporated in 1930, the Flint Institute of Arts operates in the DeWaters Art Center building on the Flint Cultural Center campus. To better meet the needs of the increasingly diverse community it serves as well as to attract new audiences and patrons, the institute embarked on a two-phased building renovation/expansion plan in March 2004. Phase I encompassed a $12.3 million renovation of the entire 85,000 square foot facility, including the art school. Phase II will entail the addition of three new galleries, totaling 18,000 square feet, to allow the exhibition of more of the institute’s collection. This grant will provide partial operating support to supplement revenues lost during construction as well as increased operating costs associated with the expanded space.
