About this grant

The Community Law and Rural Development Centre, established in 1989, has a network of advice offices that provide free legal advice and other services to poor communities in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Past support assisted the Community Law and Rural Development Centre to train and mentor paralegals in advice offices and to seek ways for these advice offices to remain sustainable. This grant increase will support the grantee to continue to train paralegals and advice office management committees on topics including fundraising, financial management, and governance; assist advice offices to register as independent institutions to improve their chances of raising funds from a variety of sources; and to provide ongoing legal education to paralegals to ensure that they are up to date with changes in relevant laws. This grant has been made possible by a partnership with Atlantic Philanthropies in support of the community advice office sector.
