About this grant

Established in 1989, the Community Law and Rural Development Centre has a network of 18 advice offices that provide free legal advice and other services to poor communities in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. Past support allowed the grantee to train and mentor paralegals within advice offices and to seek ways for these advice offices to remain sustainable. The grantee assisted 17 advice offices to register as nonprofit entities and 13 of those were subsequently able to raise funds for their operations. The paralegals assisted thousands of people with cases relating to legal recourse and recovered millions of rands on behalf of clients. This grant will support the grantee to continue to train paralegals and advice office management committees on topics including fundraising, financial management, leadership and governance, and reporting. It will also provide ongoing legal education to paralegals to ensure that they are up to date with changes in relevant laws.
