About this grant
The presidential dedication of the National World War II Memorial on May 29, 2004, will begin a summer-long national celebration and public education program to re-engage the World War II generation and American citizens. Through targeted educational programming and Web-based resources, the project will educate American school children about the World War II generation and their contributions to modern American culture, technology and economy. The goal of the project, "America Celebrates the Greatest Generation," is to bridge the gap between generations and build a stronger, more civic-minded society.Funding will support efforts to coordinate 100 days of activities to celebrate the World War II generation and encourage national audiences to participate in events, exhibits, performances and educational programs. Using the World War II Memorial as the anchor, other national memorials, museums and cultural institutions throughout the nation’s capital will be highlighted. The American Experience Foundation was created in 2001 in response to the events of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent crisis. The organization works to increase awareness and understanding of the significance of the nation’s capital.
