About this grant
In June 2004, the North Atlantic Alliance Summit will mark the transition of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) into a security organization with an international, rather than regional, frame of reference. In order for NATO to take on new roles and partnerships, there is a critical need for public support. The Pan-Atlantic Student Summit, which will take place at the same time under the direction of the Atlantic Council of the United States, will be vital in building strong ties between civil society and NATO.Funding will enable approximately 160-180 undergraduate and graduate students from Alliance countries to meet and discuss the issues on the official summit agenda, the future of the transatlantic relationship and the prospects for the future of NATO. The program will include briefings and seminars, as well as participation in a simulation by students. The opportunity to meet with Alliance leaders and heads of state and government attending the summit will be a highlight of the program. The Atlantic Council of the United States is a nonpartisan network of leaders who are convinced of the importance of effective U.S. foreign policy and the cohesion of U.S. international relationships. The council promotes constructive U.S. leadership and engagement in international affairs.
