About this grant

The Challenges and Changing Roles of the Nonprofit Sector project will enable the Centre for Policy Studies to examine the achievements and struggles of the nonprofit sector in South Africa during the past decade of democracy, and identify future challenges facing the sector. Before 1994, the South African nonprofit sector was in conflict with the apartheid state. Since the election of a nonracial democratic government, the sector has had to redefine its role in relation to the state.Multiyear funding will support a series of seminars, workshops, publications and other events to bring together a diverse group of experts and new voices within the nonprofit sector into discussions on how to move the sector forward. The center will host a national conference to present research, publications and findings, which will later be posted on the center’s Web site for comment and further discussion. The Centre for Policy Studies, an independent research organization established in the late 1980s, focuses on economics and social policy, civil society, governance and human rights, and international relations.
