About this grant
Although considerable progress has been made in the region, the countries of the Western Balkans still face many challenges to peace, stability and security. To address this, an International Commission on the Balkans has been established to develop needed political and economic reforms. The Commission was initiated and is supported by the Mott Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the King Baudouin Foundation.Funding will enable the commission to create a clear vision for the reforms necessary for the Western Balkans to be peaceful, stable and prosperous and to fully integrate with Europe and the West. Objectives include building political and popular consensus around a vision for the future; highlighting the progress in the region and recommending ways to build on such positive developments; analyzing policy alternatives; conducting study visits; and consulting with decisionmakers in the region, Europe and the United States. The mission of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, created in 1972, is to deepen understanding, promote collaborations and stimulate exchanges between Americans and Europeans.
