About this grant
The University of Michigan-Flint’s Center for Service Learning and School Partnerships was established as part of its University Outreach program in 1998. The goal of the center is to connect the university and the greater Flint community with opportunities and resources to enhance academic development and encourage active citizenship.Funding will enable the center to continue its efforts to connect faculty, staff and students with school-based projects that promote leadership development, civic engagement, professional development, parent involvement and community organization collaboration. Recent partnership projects included afterschool reading programs in five elementary schools; youth leadership development in Flint high schools; computer programming classes for elementary-age students; Future Nurses Clubs at four county middle schools; professional development opportunities for Flint teachers and principals; university faculty colloquiums; marketing to encourage more campus-community partnerships; and a collaboration with the Flint Resource Center to inform faculty and students about opportunities to work in the community.
