About this grant

Upcoming presidential elections in October 2004 will be a major turning point for Ukraine, both politically and economically. Free and fair elections will enable Ukraine to embrace democracy. Its adherence to democratic norms in these elections will have a direct impact on its aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Union and the World Trade Organization, as well as on its relationship with the United States. To encourage a fair electoral process, the Center for Strategic & International Studies has designed a series of missions in advance of the elections.Funding will support three high-level delegation missions to Kyiv in May, June and July 2004 to support free and fair presidential elections in October. Delegates will meet with the Ukrainian president and prime minister, as well as others working to ensure free and fair elections. The center will produce a comprehensive report of the delegations for distribution to the White House, senior U.S. government officials and key members of Congress. The center, founded in 1962, is a public policy research organization dedicated to providing world leaders with strategic insights and policy solutions to current and emerging global issues. Based in Washington, D.C., it is the only institution that maintains resident experts on all major geographical regions of the world.
