About this grant

This grant will support efforts by the National Foundation for Civil Society Development to promote citizen participation in decisionmaking processes at the local and regional levels in Croatia. As Croatia begins formal negotiations to join the European Union (EU), a vital component of the process is strengthening local democracy and civil society. The National Foundation for Civil Society Development was formed to address these issues and established four regional offices to improve its outreach to local communities.Funding will enable the regional offices to represent the foundation at local and regional levels; encourage cooperation between the nonprofit sector and local government; coordinate regional grant review committees; assist governmental ministries in administering social contracts and grants; organize four meetings on strategic planning with key non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in each region; and convene annual regional NGO fairs. The National Foundation for Civil Society, established in 2003, works to promote and develop civil society in Croatia.
