About this grant

This grant will support efforts to encourage minority communities in Serbia and Montenegro to participate in policy development and advocacy at the local, national and European levels. Serbia and Montenegro has one of the most diverse populations in South East Europe, with 29 ethnic groups representing 16 percent of the overall population.Multiyear funding will enable Civic Initiatives to provide training to community-based organizations; encourage dialogue among representatives of minority communities and government officials; conduct public-awareness campaigns for minority rights protection; and participate in a regional network of non-governmental organizations from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, and Romania. This grant is part of a collaborative funding initiative with the King Baudouin Foundation, the Open Society Institute and other donors advocating for the participation of minorities in policy development.Civic Initiatives, founded in 1996, works to strengthen civil society through education, promotion of democracy and support for citizen action.
