About this grant
Through its Timok Regional Development Center, the Timok Club promotes sustainable social and economic development and improve the lives of people living in the region. The Timok region in eastern Serbia borders Bulgaria and Romania and has a population of 280,000. The region, divided into eight municipalities, is economically depressed and underdeveloped and unemployment is high. As Serbia and Montenegro continues to struggle toward democracy, increased public participation in decisionmaking and other democratic processes is critical.Multiyear funding will enable the center to encourage community participation in decisionmaking; build coalitions among stakeholders in the region; provide training and capacity building on practical elements of project planning, design and implementation; collect and disseminate relevant information; link residents to local resources; and create opportunities for networking and exchange among people in the region and nationally. The Timok Club, established in 1997, is located in the city of Knjazevac and carries out programs in eight surrounding municipalities.
