About this grant

This grant will enable the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to promote governors’ policy efforts related to afterschool programs. More governors are realizing that quality afterschool programs can be critical to education, youth development and workforce initiatives. As the highest-level change agents in states, governors can play an important part in leading state-level policy efforts to improve the quality and quantity of afterschool programs.Multiyear funding will enable the center to engage governors’ advisers in statewide afterschool networks; create an urgency among the gubernatorial ranks to make afterschool a priority; and provide expertise to governors and other key policy leaders to help develop policies to improve the quality and reach of afterschool throughout states. The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, established in 1974, provides practical research and technical support to governors in generating and implementing policy.
