About this grant
The program goal is to strengthen citizen engagement in local decisionmaking through the establishment and support of environmental advocacy centers in Belarus. ISAR will provide grants and technical support to equip these centers to carry out advocacy efforts in support of Local Agenda 21, environmental justice, and public environmental monitoring. A small grants program for organizations working on these and related public participation issues will also be implemented. This project builds on previous efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of grassroots environmental groups. Over the last seven years, ISAR has distributed grants to 139 recipients totaling $317,000 in over 40 Belarusian cities and towns. Grants have supported projects ranging from environmental education and ecotourism to habitat protection and environmental advocacy. Established in 1983, ISAR’s mission is to support citizen activists and grassroots organizations in their efforts to create just and sustainable societies.
