About this grant
The Institute for Healing of Memories will host a Journey to Healing and Wholeness Conference to bring together those who have experienced violence and oppression to exchange lessons and practices on how best to deal with the transition to peace and reconciliation. The institute works mainly with ex-combatants and helps them readjust to living in a society that is committed to peace building and forgiveness after many years of conflict and violence.Multiyear funding will support the conference on Robben Island with most of the participants being ex-combatants from Rwanda and Sri Lanka, countries that have gone through situations of conflict and violence similar to South Africa. The objective of the conference is to help participants learn from one another about the various ways they have dealt with the past and the different paths they have taken toward healing. The institute was established in 1998 to work with victims of the apartheid conflict, many of whom were still suffering from trauma and struggling to reintegrate into mainstream society.
