About this grant
Independent Sector is creating an independent, national panel to review and make recommendations on how to strengthen the nonprofit sector and philanthropy. As investigations of the nonprofit sector and foundations intensify, particularly regarding issues of governance and ethical conduct, the Senate Finance Committee has invited Independent Sector to establish the panel to inform Senate deliberations.Funding will enable Independent Sector to create and convene the national panel; establish two advisory boards of prominent community leaders and experts from the nonprofit sector, business and government; create five working groups to study, and provide recommendations on, issues of governance, transparency and financial accountability; present initial findings to the panel in January 2005; publish an interim report in February 2005; and submit a final report to the Senate Finance Committee in June 2005.Independent Sector, established in 1980, is a coalition of leading nonprofit organizations, foundations and corporations that work to strengthen nonprofit initiative, philanthropy and citizen action in the United States.
