About this grant
This grant will enable Aspen Institute to update the publication "Jobs for the Urban Poor." In 1995, Aspen Institute developed the publication to promote the concept of sectoral employment development. Among workforce development programs, sectoral employment has been the leader in establishing working relationships with employers and leveraging such relationships to benefit low-income workers. The goal of the update is to raise awareness of the sectoral workforce development field among public and private funders.Funding will support a revision of "Jobs for the Urban Poor," including new research documenting the current state of the field and the range of activities included in sector work, and an active communications campaign. Specific activities will include scanning existing sector research on related economic development and workforce development schools of thought; conducting surveys of at least 50 sector programs and site visits to at least 10; developing an executive summary and disseminating approximately 15,000 copies to policymakers, philanthropic funders and program leaders; and creating a communications plan.
