About this grant
In the summer of 2003 and in the wake of civil disturbances in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm appointed a task force to develop strategies that address the underlying problems of poverty and joblessness in this high unemployment community. Following a year of discussion and analysis, the Benton Harbor Task Force identified job-training programs for young men as the highest priority in the community. As a result, a STRIVE program was designed and implemented in Benton Harbor. This final renewal grant to Flint Area Specialized Employment Services, Inc., will leverage state support for this STRIVE effort in West Michigan.
