About this grant
One of the challenges facing the countries of the Western Balkans as they transition to democratic forms of government is dealing with the recent past. Unresolved issues of blame, responsibility and justice currently divide societies and communities along ethnic and national lines and complicate the process of democratization. This grant will assist the media in becoming a positive force in helping the people of the region understand and come to terms with their past.Multiyear funding will enable Transitions Online to work with editors and senior journalists primarily in the printed media to build the capacity to cover war crime trials, the stories of victims and other issues related to dealing with the past. Activities will include four seminars; essays and articles written by seminar participants; and an online discussion forum among seminar participants and others.Transitions Online was established in 1999 by staff members of its print predecessor, "Transitions" magazine, to maintain cross-border coverage.
