About this grant
The program goal is to build a democratic culture based on human rights and the rule of law in Croatia and the Western Balkans region by stimulating Croatian society to deal with the legacy of war crimes and human rights abuses in the region. To this end, Documenta will research and gather documentation about the wars and conflicts during the 1990s; facilitate public discussion and debate on the issue of dealing with the past; monitor war crimes trials in Croatia and the region; and provide support to victims and witnesses participating in war crimes trials. Over the past two years, Documenta increased its technical capacity for maintaining data and documentation; gathered oral histories about events in specific regions of Croatia; organized debates and conferences on dealing with the past; commissioned a public opinion survey on dealing with the past; and monitored war crimes trials in Croatia. Documenta works closely with leading similar organizations in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Documenta is based in Zagreb.
