About this grant

The success of democracy in Croatia hinges on its ability to address the past. The legacy of war crimes and human rights abuses committed during the 1990s in Croatia and by Croatian forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina currently is impeding the creation of a democratic culture based on human rights and the rule of law. Multiyear funding will enable Documenta to conduct research and gather documentation about the wars and conflicts in which Croatia was involved during the 1990s; foster public discussion and debate on past abuses; monitor war crime trials in Croatia and the region; and provide support to victims and witnesses participating in war crimes tribunals.Documenta was established in early 2005 by four leading Croatian human rights organizations with the goal of triggering and supporting social and individual processes of addressing the legacies of past war crimes and human rights abuses in Croatia and the Western Balkans region.
