About this grant

South African History Online was established in 2000 to address the biased way in which the history and cultural heritage of South Africans was represented in educational and cultural institutions. Its mission is to break the silence of the country’s past and to create the most comprehensive online encyclopedia of South African history and culture. Past support enabled the grantee to change its Web site format to enable visitors to navigate it better; expand the liberation struggle history archives in time to mark the 100-year celebrations of the African National Congress in January 2012; produce an online arts and culture classroom; and develop online heritage tours for the cities that hosted the 2010 Soccer World Cup matches. Activities over the next two years will include the development of an online encyclopedia; expansion of the education, outreach, and internship programs; and building a history portal that will promote the writing, studying, and teaching of history.
