About this grant
The South African History Online was established in 2000 to promote South African history and to address the biased way in which history was represented. It provides a Web site dedicated to promoting the study and teaching of history and creating a comprehensive online encyclopedia of South African cultural heritage. Past support enabled the grantee to enhance the Web site format and make information more easily accessible, launch an internship program providing experiential learning opportunities for history students, and initiating and establishing a public history program in Namibia in partnership with local organizations. Activities over the next two years will include improving the capacity of staff to respond to the growing demand for information and knowledge from the Web site, providing support to other southern African countries to develop similar public history Web sites, and updating the online history material that is used by schools and universities.
