About this grant

For South Africa to become a truly nonracial and inclusive democracy, it is vital to document the true history of its people and the roles they have played in helping the country become what it is today. This involves disclosing the history that the apartheid system either distorted or suppressed.Multiyear funding will enable South African History Online to contribute to the building of a common, just and nonracial society through research and publication. The Web site will promote the study and popularization of South African history and culture that addresses the distortions created by the country’s colonial and apartheid past. Through its school and community program, the project will give individuals and communities the opportunity to create oral history projects that tell the histories of their own communities.South African History Online is a Web site that promotes the study and publication of South African history and culture – including correcting the distortions produced under apartheid – and challenges all citizens to contribute to the building of an inclusive, just and nonracial society.
