About this grant
Radio is one of the most powerful media in South Africa. For poor and rural communities, community radio stations are the main source of information. This grant will enable ABC Ulwazi to produce educational and developmental radio programs that encourage community participation in local government.Funding will support efforts to train 10 community radio stations to develop radio programs that foster positive cooperation and communication for social and economic development between local government and communities. It will also assist in the creation of listeners’ associations, which enhance the work of local community-based organizations through on-air discussions of issues relevant to specific communities.ABC Ulwazi is a non-governmental organization that focuses on the training of community radio broadcasters, as well as producing educational radio programs for distribution to community radio stations.
