About this grant

The Trust for Community Outreach and Education is a national organization that operates mainly in the rural areas of South Africa through six regional affiliates that act autonomously with separate governing structures and support staff. The Cala University Students Association (CALUSA), one of the trust’s affiliates, works with rural and marginalized communities within the Chris Hani district municipality in the Eastern Cape, one of the poorest provinces in South Africa.Multiyear funding will enable CALUSA to help communities advocate for effective service delivery within their localities by participating in planning processes at the local level; train staff on local government policies; conduct workshops to raise awareness of communities about local government policies, procedures and programs; monitor the implementation of integrated development plans by local governments; assist youth and women in accessing resources from local government for economic development; and assessing the impact of local government services on rural communities.
