About this grant
The University of the Western Cape was established in 1960 by the apartheid government to serve the colored population in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The Multi-Level Government Initiative is a project of the Community Law Centre, located within the University of the Western Cape. The project supports governments, donors, scholars, and civil society organizations to establish local governments and other state institutions that promote peace, development, and the rule of law in Africa. Past activities included providing policy and technical advice and assistance on a range of issues related to local governance and decentralization to national, provincial, and local government structures. The center has also conducted research on the socioeconomic and service delivery obligations of local government in South Africa and published the results widely in national and international publications. This grant will support the continuation of research and the development of tools that will be used to gather data on various topics related to decentralization.
