About this grant

The Local Government Project of the Community Law Centre at the University of the Western Cape was established six years ago to support research, advocacy and dissemination of information on local government law. The primary goal of the project is to promote the value and benefit of local government as a tool for enhancing democracy at the community level. The project also aims to help local government be more efficient in the delivery of services by increasing its understanding of its mandate and the legal framework of local governance.Multiyear funding will enable the project conduct research on policy and legislation relating to local government as an independent sphere of government and publishing the research in the Local Government Bulletin; build cooperation between local, provincial and national spheres of government; utilizing the bulletin to disseminate good practices on cooperative governance between the national, provincial and local spheres of government and informing local officials about legal and policy developments; maintaining a Web site that provides research results and other relevant materials; and providing advice and consultation services to local, provincial and national government on intergovernmental relations.The Community Law Centre at the University of the Western Cape was founded in 1990 to conduct research on human rights and democracy.
