About this grant
Drawing inspiration from City Year USA, City Year South Africa was established to mobilize the youth of South Africa to contribute to the upliftment of poor and marginalized communities and promote development. Recruited from a cross-section of youth representing all the racial, ethnic, and religious groups in the country, City Year South Africa service leaders participate in an intensive, yearlong volunteering program, aimed at addressing South Africa’s main needs and challenges. Mostly, the youth leaders have worked in schools in poor, black townships in Johannesburg and Soweto, providing instruction, after-school programs, and support to school children from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. This grant will continue to support the general purposes of the organization, including support for City Year South Africa’s youth service program, as well as the expansion of this program to other poor communities in the Gauteng province.
