About this grant
City Year South Africa was established in 2004 to encourage youth to participate in community service and development. Building on the traditions of City Year USA, City Year South Africa is dedicated to developing strong and mutually beneficial partnerships between the private, public and civil society sectors to strengthen democracy and community participation.Multiyear funding will support the development and implementation of a youth service program in 10 schools in Johannesburg and Soweto that will emphasize math, literacy and the sciences. Approximately 120 young people will be recruited and trained to work with students in these schools, primarily through afterschool programs. Program objectives include tutoring and homework support in math, literacy and science; establishing reading clubs to improve literacy and encourage reading; promoting the use of local public libraries; encouraging sporting, drama and other creative initiatives; and increasing the awareness of students about their roles and value in the community and the country.
