About this grant
Since 1998, the community foundation sector and other community forms of grantmaking have been steadily growing in South Africa and the southern Africa region. To strengthen the community foundation branch of the nonprofit sector, the South African Institute for Advancement – in partnership with Synergos – will establish the Southern African Community Grantmaker Leadership Cooperative. The cooperative will work with the different forms of community philanthropy on issues of leadership, governance, peer support, networking and asset building to encourage the growth and sustainability of community forms of giving as a whole.Multiyear funding will enable the cooperative to provide training and capacity building to the community grantmaking sector in South Africa and the southern Africa region by bringing together leaders of community grantmaker organizations to share knowledge and peer learning; develop two learning partnerships – one based in the Western Cape and the other in Gauteng – to serve as safe spaces for mutual learning, open dialogue and reflection; and convene an annual joint retreat. The South African Institute for Advancement, also known as Inyathelo, offers organizational capacity building, information resources, and practical training and support services.
