About this grant

The program goal is to promote effective public oversight and participation in government decisionmaking in Ukraine. The Open Society Foundation – Ukraine will regularly monitor and distribute findings about the performance of Ukrainian national legislative and executive authorities and political parties. The grantee will provide expertise and consulting support to regional partners focusing on local administrative and governance reform. It will also develop its own training capacity to educate local governments and nongovernmental organizations to introduce effective public participation mechanisms. During 2007-2008, the grantee refined a comprehensive methodology for monitoring Ukrainian political institutions. In addition, through a new Web site, a variety of regularly issued publications, and over 100 print and broadcast media stories, the grantee’s monitoring reports contributed to greater public awareness of the operations of the country’s democratic institutions. Since 2001, the Open Society Foundation – Ukraine has promoted participatory democracy and an open society in Ukraine.
