About this grant

This grant will enable the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Fund (UCR) to participate in developing Georgia’s first comprehensive statewide water management plan. Rapid population growth, particularly in the Atlanta region, along with periods of extreme drought have put a strain on water resources. Fortunately, the state recently began a three-year policy development process to create the comprehensive plan, which presents a unique opportunity to establish important protections for freshwater resources.Multiyear funding will support UCR’s efforts to influence the development of the statewide water management plan; monitor implementation of the Atlanta metropolitan region’s water plans; and track developments in the interstate dispute over shared water resources. UCR will work with partner groups to take full advantage of the policy reform opportunities at the state, metropolitan and interstate levels.UCR, established in 1994, is an environmental policy organization with more than 3,400 members dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River basin in order to restore and conserve their ecological health for the people, fish and wildlife that depend on the river system.
