About this grant
Facing the challenges of poverty and inadequate educational opportunities, urban African-American children are in need of expanded educational opportunities and quality afterschool programming. This grant will enable the Black Alliance for Educational Options to assess low-income and working-class African-American families in order to appropriately identify the needs of this population.Funding will support efforts to identify factors that shape how parents choose a quality afterschool program for their children. The assessment will include four cities – Detroit, Michigan; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C. – chosen because they have a significant African-American population and a significant number of low-income and working-class African-American families with children in low-performing schools.
