About this grant
This grant will provide partial support to the Phelps-Stokes Fund for the Smart Teachers As Role Models National Initiative. In recent years, a number of programs have emerged at institutions of higher education seeking to increase the number of minority men teaching in K-8 public schools. This initiative seeks to bolster these programs and promote new efforts at other institutions. Through this project, practitioners can share information, establish networks of support that will strengthen their individual programs and institutions, and have a body of research to draw upon as they, too, seek support for their programs. During the grant period, activities include further developing a Web communications platform; commissioning a series of papers; organizing a conference and series of meetings for scholars and practitioners; further developing the empowerment co-curricula; and establishing partnerships with black colleges to use the resources of the program. The Phelps-Stokes Fund, established in 1911, conducts research on human development and manages educational and international exchange programs in the United States and Liberia.
