About this grant
This renewal grant will provide support for the third cohort of students participating in the Smart Teachers as Role Models (STAR) Initiative. The program provides leadership development curriculum for students in the teacher education programs at Mott Community College, Baker College, and University of Michigan-Flint to address the scarcity of African-American male teachers in the elementary and secondary schools of Flint and Genesee County. The program evolved as part of a larger national replication effort, based on the Call Me MISTER program that was funded by the Foundation, to provide educational support and assistance to African-American male students pursuing a career in K-12 education at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.
